Description

[LINCOLNIANA]. CDV of Abraham Lincoln's dog, Fido. Springfield, IL: F.W. Ingmire, ca 1861.

CDV on cardstock mount with caption printed in lower margin, "President Lincoln's Dog." The presidential pet, named Fido, is shown in repose on a draped table. Verso with imprint of F.W. Ingmire, Springfield, Illinois.

Frederick Ingmire (1822-1876) immigrated to the United States from England in 1831 and settled in New York as a Baptist minister. His exploration of photography began as a source of additional income, but he ultimately moved to Springfield, Illinois, where he opened his own photography studio. Ingmire's studio was in the same building as Abraham Lincoln's law office. The two men apparently became acquainted in 1861 when the president elect, having made the difficult decision to leave the family dog behind in Springfield, brought Fido to the studio for a formal portrait session.
